Textile Adventures: Preview from Peru

Posted by Jody Slocum on 23rd Sep 2015

Jody Slocum, our co-founder, is in Peru this week meeting with vendors, teeing up new products and searching for unusual collectibles for the shop.

Jody reports: “It’s been a pleasure to deepen relationships with our talented vendors - last night, for example, Ciprian and his wife, Bartola, chatted with me in my Ayacucho hotel room until the wee hours.” Earlier in the day, Jody pawed through piles of pillows in their workshop - pillows you’ll soon see in the shop!

Cultural Cloth - Peru Preview 2A few of the pillows needed some finishing details –no problem! Bartola’s sister, Rosa, a talented artist, completed the crocheted details.

Cultural Cloth-Peru Preview 3Bartola’s workshop is full of colorful hand spun yarn - and sounds, too, like the sound of weavers throwing shuttles that carry the yarn across the warp and the thud of the loom’s beater bar settling the weft into place as the cloth for pillows take shape before your very eyes.

Cultural Cloth - Peru Preview 4Jody was especially excited to visit Ayacucho, famous for its 33 churches, one for each year of Christ’s life. Until recently the city was, unfortunately, more famous for the terror created by The Shining Path and tourism was non-existent. Jody reports encountering only a few ‘extranjeros’ (foreigners) during her brief visit.

Jody heads for Cusco today- we’ll report our findings with previews soon! To be among the first to see her finds when she returns to Maiden Rock, plan to join us for the upcoming Fresh Art Fall Tour, taking place next Friday, October 2, through Sunday, October 5, and the Maiden Rock Meander event, being held on October 17! You can find the details about both of these events here.
