This is a special "Map of Her Village" embroidery from the Stitch St Luce project on the island nation of Madagascar. This map embroidery was made by Guerceline. Mary Anne had it commissioned and it took nearly 8 months to receive it. Stitch St Luce project was founded by Sarah Brown who now works with 23 highly skilled artisans in Madagascar, one of the poorest countries in the world. Ninety-nine percent of the population subsists on less than $.95 per day.
In 2016 Cultural Cloth obtained a collection of fairy tale embroideries from Stitch St Luce. The pieces sold out immediately. Mary Anne Wise of Cultural Cloth, challenged the artisans to try something different. Could they make a map embroidery of a place they know well? Guerceline responded that she thought she could "make an embroidery map of her village." Click here and watch this video which is the story of Stitch St Luce.
The embroidery is stitched on navy blue and measures 13" high and 36.5" wide with a 2" border around the piece that makes it easy to mount or frame the piece. Click here for ideas on how to display your handmade embroidery form Stitch St Luce.
