Morocco is a handmade textile lovers paradise. In Marrakech we found knotted and flat weave Boucherouite rugs made from recycled women's jellaba dresses. We motored from Marrakech to Ouarzazate in the south where the landscape was stark and rocky and we found tapestry Ahknif Map rugs and Glaoua rugs. Glaoua rugs feature tapestry weaving, knots and embroidery. In the north in Khenifra we attended the weekly local rug auction where women brought their handmade textiles to the market and rug shop owners and local women purchased the items. Buying and selling new and vintage tribal Berber rugs the way it has been done for centuries. Here we found Zayne rugs, Mrirt rugs, Azilal and of course the quintessential black and white handmade Beni Ourain Moroccan rug.
