Textile Adventures: Jody's Final Update from Peru

Posted by Jody Slocum on 29th Sep 2015

We've been enjoying Jody's regular updates from Peru over the past few weeks. It's exciting to hear the stories of the people and artisans she's met and the delightful cultural treasures she's picked up to bring back to Maiden Rock.

Jody's on her way back home now. To keep you in the loop on her adventure, we're sharing her last update to us with you:

Cultural Cloth - Peru KnittingIt’s my last day in this extraordinary country – I have meetings lined up with artisans and producer reps - and I’m feeling those end-of-trip competing twinges; looking forward to getting back home but there’s so much more to see!

Here’s what I’ve learned: medicine to combat the affects of high altitude work. I went from Lima at sea level to Ayacucho at 9,000 feet in one day. The next day I was in Cusco, altitude of 11,200 feet. With no time to slowly acclimate, and a long To-Do List, I took the advice of seasoned travelers and downed the medication two days before arriving.

Cultural Cloth - Jody Slocum - Peru Textile AdventureI’ve had the pleasure of meeting old friends and acquaintances and experienced their generous hospitality, welcomed into their homes or accompanied them on excursions off the beaten tourist path. I’ve enjoyed meeting many talented interns intent upon helping indigenous artisans raise themselves out of poverty. These young women give me hope for the world. I’ve seen world-class artistry drop off the needles of knitters that call to mind the expression: great mastery is as if unskilled. And, so much more.

This morning my challenge is to organize my purchases so they arrive safely back to the shop for our amazing customers to enjoy. I'm looking forward to seeing you soon.

And WE are looking forward to seeing you soon, too. Our shop in Maiden Rock will be open Thursdays through Sunday, from 10am - 5pm, this fall season.
