Our guide brought us to Shyamji’s studio located down a dusty cow-path in Bhuj, the western part of the Kutch, India. Inside the family compound, women spun wool and cotton and dyers tended live vats of indigo buried in earthenware jugs submerged underground. The rhythmic ‘clack clack clack’ of the loom provided the soundscape. We fell in love with the handwoven throws. The indigo colored central panel has beautiful variations of blue. Stripes along each edge about 4 inches wide red, burnt orange and citrine yellow. The hand wrapped fringe is in burnt orange, burgundy and wheat.
