Our guide brought us to Shyamji’s studio located down a dusty cow-path in Bhuj, the western part of the Kutch, India. Inside the family compound, women spun wool and cotton and dyers tended live vats of indigo buried in earthenware jugs submerged underground. The rhythmic ‘clack clack clack’ of the loom provided the soundscape. The throw is a coarse wool woven in wide stripes of the natural wool colors right off the sheep- brown and cream with natural dyed colors of light indigo blue, pale rose, burgundy and peach. The borders have woven patterns and stripes in a dusty rose, cream and charcoal. The hand wrapped fringe in the same colors as the throw.
