Environmentally friendly hemp cloth dates back to around 8,000 BCE; it’s been a staple for many cultures worldwide. Demonized because of the smoking varietal, hemp lost favor. Which is unfortunate because this handsome cloth has many desirable properties including more fiber from the same amount of land used to grow cotton or flax. Retting, Scutching & Hackling

Add these words to your lexicon: Retting is the process of breaking down the chemical bond that holds the hemp plant together. Scutching is when the woody stems are removed and the long fibers emerge (up to 5 meters long!) and are cleaned. Hackling is aligning the fibers in preparation for spinning.
