Setting Sail For India

Setting Sail For India

Written by Mary Anne Wise

Our shop in Maiden Rock closed for the season on Dec 23. No worries: we'll be processing on-line orders throughout the winter.

Winter is when we venture forth, make new contacts with artisan groups and get inspired by amazing, motivated women who produce exquisite handmade textiles from all over the world. This year we’re taking our quest for inspiration to India for what is shaping up to be the shopping trip to end all shopping trips. We'll spend 21 days traveling from Mumbai to Delhi in search of artisans who are making bedding that you will fall in love with and want for your home. We will be looking for block printed coverlets, pieced quilts and Kantha quilts and more.

Our strategy is to seek out small artisan groups who are highly skilled at their craft: weavers, embroiders, quilters, block printers, and meet them in their studios, find out the difficult-to-describe-but-we'll-know-it-when-we-see it special something that we immediately identify as That Which We Can't Wait To Bring Back to our customers. Something we know you'll love and want to use in your home.

You can follow us as we trek across India via Facebook and Instagram. If you want to be kept updated, make sure to Like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram. We promise to post images of treasures as we find them and we’ll include quips that will give you insight to our trip, too.

We'll travel mostly by car so that we can really see India. We can’t wait to finally see the cacophony of textile color that is Northern India. Know that we take you along with us for without you there is no shop, no on-line store, no support for the talented artisans we hope to soon discover and represent. Please follow us as we explore western India!
