Handmade Natural Fiber Wounaan Basket 3 Panama (6.25" tall x 7"wide)

This basket is made from natural palm fronds cut into fine strips. The sturdy basket is woven with a complex technique and with a fine tight pattern. The Wounaan women are considered the finest basket makers in the world. Through basketry they help preserve their culture and in so doing they respect the earth with sustainable harvesting practices. Colors: light tan, wheat, red brown and black.

The Wounaan of Panama’s rain forest believe all plants have spirits and therefore the basket maker is a Spirit Weaver. Contemporary Wounaan baskets are intended to function as art and as a woman weaves her basket, she captures the plants’ spirits in her basket.
