Multicolores is a Guatemalan registered non-profit organization that supports Maya women in their process of self-discovery and artistic development. Multicolores’ programs are transformative- creating long-term, sustainable impacts that strengthen entire communities. They use art as a tool for exploration and expression, igniting the artists’ many talents and abilities, and empowering them to become powerful agents of change.
Multicolores works with groups of Maya K’iché, Kaqchiquel and Tzutujil women from the Guatemalan highlands. The artists represent 9 communities from the regions of Sololá, Totonicapán, Quiché, Quetzaltenango and Sacatepéquez. Together they are a strong support network that encourages well-being and fulfillment among all members. They believe in mutual aid, promote environmental consciousness and thrive on building relationships with diverse local and international communities.
Multicolores' hooked rugs are a vibrant blend of tradition and sustainability. These handcrafted pieces, made from recycled t-shirts, offer a unique pop of color and pattern to any space. Each rug is a testament to the artist's creativity and the rich history of Mayan culture.
Inspired by centuries-old Semana Santa rugs, Multicolores' artisans weave together ancestral Mayan motifs, nature-inspired elements, and their own imaginations. Every rug is a one-of-a-kind artwork, filled with symbolism and meaning. From zigzags representing mountains to stars symbolizing astrology, each design tells a story of Mayan culture and beliefs.
Beyond their beauty, these rugs are also a testament to sustainability. By repurposing recycled t-shirts, Multicolores helps reduce waste and create a more environmentally friendly product.
