Weaving Association in Southern Morocco

For almost a decade, we have been sourcing a variety of rugs from our dear friends at the Weaving Association in Southern Morocco. Over the years, we have really enjoyed our relationship with this association, allowing us to work directly with them on various styles of rugs and seeing them come to life as the artisans (mostly women) weave through each piece. From tapestry-style rugs, to Boucherouite, and map rugs - here’s a little more about some of their fabulous techniques that we keep falling in love with.

For almost a decade, we have been sourcing a variety of rugs from our dear friends at the Weaving Association in Southern Morocco. Imagine a rural village nestled in the foothills of the high Atlas Mountains, where goats like to climb to the very top of olive trees, and where sheepherders keep a watchful eye while listening to the radio. Not to mention that the breed of sheep is the Siroua breed, known to be a lustrous wool and found only in this region of Morocco.

Boucherouite Rugs - these woven rugs are a fairly recent new folk art form that arose out of a wool shortage in the 60's. Without wool, the weavers reached for whatever was at hand: clothing scraps, tailors remnants and more and more.

Kharita Map-style Tapestry Rugs - said to reference their landscape. Map rugs are characterized by a dizzying and complex pattern that some say is reminiscent of the landscape. These rugs are woven in the tapestry technique on an upright loom and are accomplished only by highly skilled weavers.

Glaoui Rugs - characterized by several weaving techniques within the body of the rug including plain weave, knotted pile, and twill pattern weaving.

Boutilwah Tirira Rugs - has several weaving techniques including plain weave, knotted pile, tapestry, twill pattern weaving and some embroidery. 100% Wool with cotton warp threads.
