The Story of Bandhani, a resist-dye technique:
Years ago a Fakir (a religious ascetic who lives solely on alms) was treated kindly by the Khatri community in the Kutch. When he departed their village he gave them a handkerchief and said: “you will make your living from this kerchief.” They didn't think much about it until the cloth was accidentally dropped in a dye bath. When they opened the cloth, they noticed fakir had tied it in little knots and the knots resisted the dye and created a pattern. This dye technique, called a re-sist technique (because the dye doesn't penetrate into knotted areas) would become known as bandhani. (Bandana scarves from the American west got their origins from this technique of making pattern on cloth, said to pre-date loom controlled pattern weaving.)
